PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVE II - Early Childhood Nutrition Program

Salary Range:  $34,668 Plus full benefits – Three Year Contract until 9/30/2011

The University of California Cooperative Extension (Alameda County) is recruiting for an energetic field coordinator
to extend and promote an Early Childhood Program, including, nutrition, physical activity, and edible gardening, at Early Childhood School sites in Alameda County.  The Program Representative will be responsible for helping integrate the curriculum into the regular classroom activities; provide technical support at seven (7) school sites; conduct trainings; work with Mentor Teachers and Site Administrators.  This person will be responsible for coordinating the field research programs, providing on-going technical assistance, and trainings to five (5) new Early Childhood Sites serving economically challenged children. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Network Programs in Alameda County

Qualifications:
Education, experience or specialized training requirements.
o Must have a Bachelors degree or higher or the equivalent education and experience.
o Be responsible and self-motivated.
o At least 1 year experience training professionals, conducting workshops; facilitation.
o Knowledge of Bay Area diverse youth issues and conditions helpful.
o Experienced working with economically challenged communities in the Bay Area.
o Bi-lingual Spanish or Asian language preferred.
o Experience in applied research preferred.
o Have a valid California driver’s license to drive a county vehicle.
o Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
o A criminal background investigation check will be required for the successful candidate, including fingerprinting and a criminal history clearance by the California Department of Justice/FBI.

Mental and Physical:
o Must have good communications and interpersonal skills.
o Responsible and self-motivated.
o Can work independently and use initiative to meet deadlines.
o Ability to motivate and recruit extenders.
o Demonstrates skill in using non-formal education methods.
o Ability to teach effectively and to deliver presentations to groups.
o Must be able to carry boxes and materials up to 20 lbs.

Special Conditions of Employment: Candidates should be able to work flexible hours (some evenings and weekends), must be able to travel to different areas of the county; carry boxes and educational materials up to 20 pounds. Able to drive, have transportation and valid insurance.  A criminal background investigation check is required prior to employment.

PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVE III - Nutrition Garden Manager

                                                                                                        Essential Functions: The Nutrition Garden Manager (NGM) leads and manages the implementation of the nutrition garden project at thirty six (36) sites for the Nutrition Education Training Academy (NETA) for the Oakland Unified School District. NETA enriches and supports the children’s nutrition knowledge and experiences that lead to a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables, and encourages an appreciation of agriculture and surrounded environment through hands on participatory learning. This position requires strong background in nutrition and gardening as well as a deep interest in children’s well being and healthy communities.
The  manager  supervises twenty stipend paid-teacher assistants; implements the classroom based and outdoor garden program; monitors the garden lessons with daily snacks; plans and designs gardens for each of the 36 sites; trains and organizes ongoing trainings, workshops, conferences, field trips, and demonstration lighthouses for the Mentor Teachers; and links the Nutrition Garden with the rest of the NETA program. In addition, the manager writes grants, raises funds, and oversees the finances of the project; maintains liaison with the community and other nutrition-garden school groups to build support and mutual assistance.  The NGM represents the program at the state level; advocates for more resources; links the program with other statewide projects including farm to school.

Skills and Knowledge: Candidates should have a bachelor's degree training and experience in public health nutrition, kinesiology, nutrition, and other related areas. Experience working with economically challenged communities in urban settings preferred. The ideal candidate should have experience in :

Garden Management and Coordination
Coordinate the implementation of the schoolyard nutrition garden project initially at thirty six (36) sites.  Conduct education and trainer for  teacher leading the nutrition-garden project at each site.

Curriculum Development
Prepares educational materials and handouts for teachers, and volunteers in collaboration with Master Gardener. 

Fiscal Management
Prepare budget forecast and estimates for each site, identify other sources of funding; conduct fund-raising events, identify potential in-kind donors

Supervision and Management
Supervise Community Gardener, casual labor employees, parent volunteers, and six garden stipend paid Teacher Assistants, coordinate the field trips and demonstration trainings for children and parents; provide technical assistance and support to the TA to conduct working garden days.

Evaluation
Collaborate with the Research Unit to conduct the effectiveness of the NETA gardening program through observation, site visits and consultation with individual project leads. In addition, the coordinator maintain an on going evaluation report for all projects on a quarterly/annually basis.
