Previous AnnouncementsPeople's Grocery--Mobile Market Jump-Off Party, September 27, 2003, 3:00-6:00p.m. This inaugural celebration for mobile produce vans that sell fruits, vegetables, and healthy snacks in West Oakland neighborhoods will feature food, educational booths, taste tests, the Power Play! prize wheel, and more, will take place outside the West Oakland YMCA at 3265 Market Street. www.p Hayward School District "Farm Faire," September 27, 2003, 12noon-4:00p.m. This special farm and produce education event is sponsored by the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association and will take place at Tyrrell Elementary, at 7000 Tyrrell Avenue in Hayward. Aside from "Farm to School" booths there will be Disney Extreme Team and Power Play! games and activities. Food Demonstration and Radio Disney Extreme Team Activities, September 21, 2003, 12noon to 4:00pm. In celebration of 5 a Day Week, Radio Disney has partnered with 5 a Day--Power Play! to emphasize the importance of eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day and being physically active. This activity will take place at the San Pablo Food Max Supermarket, 13220 San Pablo Avenue, and will feature Disney Extreme Team games and activities, Power Play! information and giveaways, plus a yummy food tasting as well. AgriCultural Roots Fair, September 13, 2003, 10am to 5pm. This community event, being held at the Oakland Museum, will feature diverse agricultural, agrarian, and culinary traditions, and will have a strong emphasis on sustainability and health. The Fair aims to help create enduring urban-rural connections between regional growers of ethnic and specialty foods and the East Bay's diverse urban population. Food for Thought Art and Poetry Contest, entries must be submitted by August 1, 2003 Submit your original artwork or poetry on the general subject of food. Growing, eating, and sharing food, and culinary and agricultural traditions are all good themes. Winners will receive a $100 gift certificate, which will be rewarded at the AgriCultural Roots Fair. 2003 African American Health Summit, January 31 & February 1, 2003. Kick-off Black History month attend a two- day conference at Oakland Marriott City Center. The summit addresses the African American health disparities, status and solutions. This conference will benefit those working with churches to faith-based groups, the medical field, public health departments, elected officials, recovery programs, mental health groups, civic clubs, senior and youth advocates. Saturday, February 1st: The Bay Area's largest FREE public nutrition and exercise health fair for African Americans. Come participate in fitness testing, healthy cooking demonstrations, "aerobic electric slide", yoga, Tai Chi, games, free food samples and many more health activities. Health screenings offered. In Alameda County coalition members submitted a resolution to the Board of Supervisors to declare September a 5 a Day month. This month long celebration is in conjunction with the National 5 a Day Week, September 22 - 28. The sub-committee organizing the 5 a Day month has prepared a packaged of information for the schools, after-schools and community organizations, and members of the coalition. It includes information about events organized by coalition members in their respective agencies, recipes, 5 a Day Pledge, fitness tips, seasonal produce, and other activities for teachers to implement. Join the members of the coalition that are participating in 5 a Day Month Join us in the Campaign to educate 9- to 11-year-olds and their families on making healthy lifestyle choices. 5 a Day Power Play! Campaign encourages students to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, and to exercise for at least 60 minutes per day. 2002
Dole Virtual Classroom, September 23-27.
The Dole 5 a Day Virtual Classroom features interactive learning
that reinforces reading and writing skills while teaching young children
about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, and getting regular
physical activity. 2002 Dole 5 a Day Recipe Contest. Children ages 5-12 can win a $10,000 savings bond for their favorite original fruit and vegetable recipe. Entries must be received by November 15, 2002. For more information visit the Dole website www.dole.com. 2002 Annual Open Garden Day, September 21,from 10 to 5pm. The event introduces Bay Area residents to the garden projects in their own communities. It is a self-guided tour of schools, community, urban market gardens, demonstration, and memorial gardens. The Open Garden Map, which publicizes the event serve as a guide to around 250 gardens and urban agriculture projects. The Fair will celebrate the connection and strengthen of cultures to the land. It will feature ethnic foods, local farmer products, Childrens Cooking and Gardening Activities, Comparative Tasting of selected seasonal produce. 5 a Day- Power Play! Coalition will have two booth, other organizations involved in nutrition, health, school and community gardening will also be involved.
